Anton Modin and Gary Aldington will race Go GPS Racing’s Fountain in Super Vee at the XINSURANCE Clearwater Offshore Nationals this weekend on an engine built from parts sourced wherever the team could find them, after the boat’s original engine failed in testing.
Modin told Powerboat News the team needs to race at Clearwater to qualify for the Key West Offshore World Championships, which run from November 1 to 8.
Anton Modin, in a message to Powerboat News:
We’ve got it running now, but it hasn’t been easy.
Parts From Everywhere
Photos Modin sent from the workshop show how badly the testing failure went: a piston wrecked around its connecting rod, and a hole punched through the side of the engine’s Champ Pans sump.
Anton Modin:
We blew one engine testing, and since then Simon Williams, our boss and the boat’s owner, has been searching everywhere for parts. Gary has now built one with parts from all over, so our package isn’t at its best, but we need to do this race to qualify for Key West.
A Four-Person Effort
The boat carries sponsorship from Cortez Cove, Airos and Eastwood Racing alongside Go GPS, and the crew behind it is a small one.
Anton Modin:
We’re racing the Go GPS Racing Fountain in the Super Vee class. It’s owned by Simon Williams, so it’s him, Gary, me and his wife Dee who are trying to make a run for Key West.
Modin, a former UIM Class 3A World Champion, and Aldington, the 2025 UKOPRA Class 1 champion, won this year’s storm-shortened Cowes Torquay Cowes together in Double Trouble. That result also followed an engine scramble, with the crew replacing a sheared supercharger belt spline in the days before the race, using a part that arrived from America.
Racing at Clearwater
Go GPS Racing is one of two Super Vee entries on Race World Offshore’s registration list, running as SV-1 with Modin driving and Aldington on the throttles. The other is 52, DSK Marine, with Tim Linden driving and Rob Lockyer throttling.
Organisers list Super Vee to start on Saturday, September 26, behind Class 1, in the race scheduled for 1:00pm EDT off Clearwater Beach.
