Rasmus Hamrén and Madeleine Samuelsson recovered from ninth place to win a chaotic, red-flagged Class 3B Race 1 at the UIM Offshore European Championship in Tvedestrand on Friday, as Jan Trygve Braaten and Svein Arne Uppstad took Class 3C and Sigurd Uppstad and Frida Uberg Sandvik won Class 3J.

Class 3B

The first start was abandoned before it properly began, after the fleet bunched dangerously close together. Hamrén said the field was too tightly packed for comfort.

Rasmus Hamrén:

“Almost all of 3B were in the same line at the start. It felt very congested.”

A restart followed, but Hamrén and Samuelsson’s trouble wasn’t over. Running behind a Class 3C boat sharing the water, they picked up cooling problems from the wash ahead and slipped to ninth.

Rasmus Hamrén:

“We had cooling issues from the wash off the 3C boat ahead of us, which dropped us to ninth. We then got ourselves together and moved into first within two or three laps. We didn’t think much of it before the start, but we’re really happy with how we drove the race.”

Their charge through the field came at the expense of two Swedish rivals who never got the chance to answer back. Adam Wrenkler and Matilda Wrenkler retired early with a fuel issue while running in the leading group, and Max Samuelsson and Joel Sehgneberg went out later with a separate fuel problem while running second, according to Hamrén. Oline Nordli and Andrine Goderstad Hirschel-Haag took second for Norway, with Hamrén singling out Nordli’s drive as fast and impressive.

Class 3C

Jan Trygve Braaten and Svein Arne Uppstad, racing as C-10 after their pre-event number correction, held off William Södrelind and Jonatan Rindar by just over three seconds. Hamrén, watching from the 3B fleet, flagged the pair as one to watch.

Rasmus Hamrén:

“In a previous World Championship, William got within about three seconds of Braaten, who’s well known in the class, so tomorrow could be a fun race to watch in 3C, and in 3B too.”

Kasper Nising and Felix Frøytlog completed the podium. Kristian Einerkjær and Synnøve Solheim Kristensen were the only retirement, their run ended under UIM Rule 319.01 after failing to complete 70% race distance.
