The 54th Coniston Powerboat Record Week began on Coniston Water yesterday with around ten boats on site, one of the smallest turnouts the event has seen in its 54 years across Windermere and Coniston.

No entry list has been published by the organisers but a press release issued on Sunday evening, hours before the first runs, named only three competitors as early entries.

Polish racer Cezary Strumnik has made the trip from Chodzież with his OSY400 class hydroplane Mosquito Gold, powered by a Yamato engine and prepared by his own team. He is supported by the Polish Powerboat and Water Ski Association.

Peter Little is entered in Clubman 2000 with Team 26, an Allison hull running a 200hp Mercury XR2. The Birmingham competitor is a Coniston regular, with runs recorded in the event’s own published results going back to 2006.

Benjamin Holehouse and co-driver Sophie Holehouse run the Phantom 19 The Bandit in the HOCR Sports Boat 300hp Max category, powered by a Mercury 200XS and prepared by Graham Lawton and Kevin Stephens. The Nottinghamshire team has previously raced internationally at the Raid Pavia-Venezia.

Team Endeavour Racing UK travelled north for the week with the Amaroq 40, the British diesel two-stroke outboard, in search of a diesel record.

Record Week runs to Friday 6 November on the measured kilometre, with entries still taken in person at the Record Week Office until 16:00 on Thursday.
