Hilmer Wiberg’s F2 Debut: European Bronze, World Silver
Since Sunday afternoon, the sport of powerboat racing has focused on Mathilda Wiberg’s historic UIM F2 World Championship win in Portugal.
However, it shouldn’t be forgotten that her brother Hilmer was topping the leaderboard going into the final race in Vila Velha de Ródão in only his first season of racing in the class.
A rod through the engine block cost him what looked like a certain third place, which would have meant that the siblings would have been tied on points, with Mathilda’s race wins giving her the title on countback.
As it turned out, the young Swede had accumulated enough points to win a UIM Silver Medal to go with the Bronze he won in the F2 European Championship held in Kaunas at the beginning of the season.
He told Powerboat News:
“I was really pleased with my third in Lithuania, it was my first time in an F2 boat and I had no practice before the event. It was beyond expectations.”
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, Hilmer has already bagged 14 medals in his short racing career including 3 World Championship wins and you can bet that tally will rise as he races through his twenties.
