Jonas Andersson claimed his first UIM F1H2O World Championship on Sunday, November 28, 2021, completing a back-to-back double at Figueira da Foz to overhaul the title standings and become champion after 102 races and 15 years at the top of the sport.
The 47-year-old from Frövi, Sweden, started from pole and led every lap of both races, accumulating 40 championship points over the weekend – one more than Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al Qemzi, who finished third in Sunday’s race. Two-time champion Shaun Torrente, who came through from 14th to fifth, could not do enough to mount a title challenge.
“It’s been a frustrating two years waiting for redemption after losing the championship title in 2019 tied in points to Shaun. We worked hard for this sweep this week and I want to thank all my crew for their help in making me a World Champion for the first time in my career in F1.” – Jonas Andersson
The Race
Andersson led from the start, but the race was interrupted on lap 29 when Marit Strømøy crashed on the front straight. After the restart, Andersson pulled clear again while Alec Weckström of Gillman Racing and Sami Selio – a two-time world champion chasing a third title – ran close behind him.
On the final restart, four drivers were disputing position into turn four when Weckström and Selio collided. Selio came off worst, his boat sinking and his title hopes with it. The debris in the water required the rescue team to clear the course, but time and the 40-lap limit ran out before another restart could be mounted. Andersson was declared the winner and World Champion.
Weckström took second on his way to clinching the Rookie of the Year award – only his third event in the championship. Fellow Finnish rookie Kalle Viippo drove from 15th to finish sixth. Peter Morin of the CTIC Shenzhen China Team was fourth, Bartek Marszalek seventh, and Portugal’s Duarte Benavente eighth, collecting more championship points in front of his home crowd.
